Dubai, UAE and Waldwick, NJ / November 15, 2023 — Six high school students from Dubai and the surrounding region were introduced at the Dubai Airshow 2023 today as the Astronaut Al Worden Endeavour Scholarship’s “Mission Team 16,” winners of an all-expenses paid week-long, hands-on astronaut training experience next July at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp in Huntsville, AL.

The Endeavour Scholarship is the lead corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative of the show’s U.S. representative and organizer of the USA Partnership Pavilion, Kallman Worldwide. The program honors its namesake Worden, pilot of the Apollo 15 Command Module “Endeavour,” whose lifelong commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education included serving as Kallman’s STEM ambassador at trade shows around the world from 2016 until his death in 2020. To date, the program has awarded scholarships to 48 students and 12 educators from eight countries.

Mission Team 16 was announced by U.S. organizer Tom Kallman, president & CEO, Kallman Worldwide, in partnership with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre and supported by AmCham Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Spirit AeroSystems, and Dubai Airshow, during a ceremony in the USA Partnership Pavilion. Also in attendance were guests of honor, the Honorable Martina Strong, U.S. Ambassador to the UAE, and Col. Mike Bloomfield (USAF, Ret.), former NASA Space Shuttle Pilot/Commander (STS- 86, 97,110), who is attending the show as the Pavilion goodwill ambassador for industry and Endeavour. In addition to his presence on the show floor, Bloomfield is touring area schools to promote STEM education and careers.

“Every country we work in — and we’ve worked in at least 50 of them since our company was founded in 1963 — is facing the same challenges to prepare its young people for the future. Many also see that future in space,” said Kallman Worldwide President and CEO Tom Kallman. “As an extension of our work advancing global trade in exhibition halls around the world, and with the support of global partners in government, industry, the military, and academia, the Endeavour Scholarship mission is to connect with worldwide interest in space to promote STEM careers in all industries.”

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, Kallman’s in-country counterpart, selected Mission Team 16 student members Shahad Abdulla Ibrahim Hassan Ismail, Hind Khalid Saood Abdulaziz Alsuwaidi, Fatma Mansoor Anwar Ali Habib Jaffar Ali, Hamad Omar Hamad Abdullah Bushahab, from 120 students identified for their academic achievement. The educator is Fatima Ahmed Al Marzouqi. They are the third Endeavour team to be selected from the UAE, following Mission Team 1 (students Alanood Alhajri, Mohammed AlDhaheri, Omran Rahma Al Shamsi, and Saif Baha Al Badawna, and educators Rasha Abou Arkoub and Ghaleb Awad Wahbi), and Mission Team 5 (students Shaikha Eissa Alzaabi, Faris Mohamed Almheiri, Hessa al-Nuaimi, Abdulla Almarashda, Maha Al Seiari, and educator Rasha Abou Arkoub).

“There is a main driver in our government to develop a new knowledge-based economy, and the space sector is chosen to be an enabler for this transformation,” said UAE Space Agency Director, H. E. Salem Butti Salem Al-Qubaisi. “Since Al Worden first visited here in 2017, our partnership with Kallman Worldwide and subsequently the Endeavour Scholarship is, in my mind, a model for how the Dubai Airshow strengthens our UAE economy and our community in pursuit of this goal.”
