Endeavour Scholarship Students and Educators Awarded with ‘Most Outstanding Team’ at Space Camp
Four Mission Teams, consisting of 16 students and four educators, attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama this past week and received high honors after week-long, hands-on astronaut training program
Huntsville, AL / July 17, 2022 – Astronaut Al Worden Endeavour Scholarship Class of 2022 attended Space Camp and U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama from July 3-7 and were commended for having the ‘Most Outstanding Team’ in the Advanced Academy.
Scholarship recipients – four Mission Teams from the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Chile, and the United Kingdom, consisting of 16 students and four educators – were sent on an all-expense paid trip to Space Camp for hands-on astronaut training. The scholarship was founded by Apollo 16 Astronaut Al Worden with an aim to foster greater international understanding and cooperation, and inspire the next generation of innovators, explorers, and leaders in the global aerospace community.
While attending camp, students were able to participate in many different activities including ziplining, scuba diving, space-related ‘missions’, anti-gravity simulations, rocket construction and launching, as well as take several courses on the logistics of space exploration.
At graduation, this year’s class of Endeavour scholars were awarded with ‘Most Outstanding Team’ in their age group. This honor was presented to “a team that has displayed an incredible level of teamwork in all that they do during the week at Space Camp. The members of the Outstanding Team arrive on Sunday as separate individuals but leave on Friday as one cohesive unit.”
A Space Camp Counselor went on to describe that “they [the ‘Most Outstanding Team’] take on every activity in the day and endeavour with a team attitude and scored consistently high in all their engineering challenges and missions. The outstanding team as a collective whole displays an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and helping each other out.”
Sophia Tapia, a student from the Chilean Mission Team recounted her experience right before officially graduating from the program. “I am really grateful for this amazing experience and for all the people that support me from the beginning... My favorite part was the Mission because I put on the spacesuit and I felt like I was a real astronaut and I flew like superman! It was amazing – This has been the best experience I have ever had in my life.”
