DIGITAL TRADE MISSION: CHILE | INFRASTRUCTURE FOR AVIATION/AIRPORT EQUIPMENT SECTORS
Tuesday, August 18, 2020

OVERVIEW

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported “the air transport market in Chile is forecast under the “current trends” scenario to grow by 78% in the next 20 years. This would result in an additional 13.2 million passenger journeys by 2037. If met, this increased demand would support approximately US $12.6 billion of GDP and almost 220,000 jobs.”

And although the current global health and economic situation will undoubtedly cause a temporary disruption to these projections, Chile’s long-term trends remain strong. A prominent driver of this growth is the emergence of new, agile, low-cost carriers (LCC) that are offering an array of new point-to-point options for domestic and international passengers.

To meet this expected growth, Chile has embarked on an ambitious $1.4 billion Airport Modernization Plan, with the stated goal of doubling terminal capacity at 17 airports throughout the country over the next 20 years. Part of the master plan includes constructing a second international airport in Santiago by 2030 when passenger traffic at the current airport exceeds its design capacity.
